Dorothy Gloede Niemeyer

Dorothy H. Gloede Niemeyer, 76, of Hazelton and formerly of Sumner, died  on Monday, May 27, 2013, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 31, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Church-Buck Creek with Rev. Susan Friedrich officiating. Interment will follow at Union Mound Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30th  at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. A memorial fund will be established.  

Dorothy Helen, daughter of Robert and Viola Tietje Judisch, was born on September 14, 1936, in Bremer County, Iowa.  She was baptized on September 27, 1936, and confirmed on April 2, 1950, at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Buck Creek.  She was united in marriage with Leslie Gloede on August 28, 1955, at St. John’s Lutheran of Buck Creek.  They made their home in rural Sumner for fifty-one years.  During this time, she had worked as a waitress and operated her own restaurant, “The Big Dipper.”  She also worked at Walvatne Floor covering in Sumner for twenty years.  When she married Leslie, she was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in rural Sumner where she taught Sunday School and served as the superintendent.  She was a youth advisor, belonged to the Ladies Fellowship, and the Crusaders.  In March of 2007, Dorothy and Les joined St. John’s Lutheran Church of Buck Creek.  She was an active member in the church by singing in the choir and belonging to WELCA.  After Leslie’s death in May of 2007, she married Orville Niemeyer on September 19, 2008.  Together they enjoyed traveling to California, Niagara Falls, and especially to her favorite place, Branson, Missouri.  In addition to her church work, Dorothy also enjoyed quilting, sewing, volleyball, spending time with her grandchildren, dancing, singing with the Hootenannies in Hazelton, and playing cards in several card clubs.

In addition to her husband, Orville of Hazelton, she is survived by four children, Randy (Linda) Gloede of Denver, Rick (Kathy) Gloede of Sumner, Kelly (Wayne) McKinney of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Scott (JaDee) Gloede of LaPorte City; six step children, Patricia (Chuck) Bartie of Sumner, Dale (Wendy) Niemeyer of Coffeeville, Oklahoma, Cheryl (Scott) Hampton of Sumner, Lisa (Terry) Kegly of Ames, Denise (Thor) Johnson of Dunkerton, and Darwin Niemeyer of Phoenix, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Angela Gloede, Kristie (Tyler) Bottoms, Heather Gloede, Anthony Gloede, Megan Gloede, Joseph Gloede, and Kianna Gloede; ten step grandchildren, Tim Bartie, Kole Niemeyer, Sonny Niemeyer, Sara Hampton, Carrie Hampton, Kimberly Hampton, Jordan Kegly, Emile Kegly, Hannah Johnson, and Zach Johnson; two brothers, Lawrence (Dorothy) Judisch of Sumner and David (Gail) Judisch of Decorah; and three sisters, Ruth Steinbronn of Readlyn, Miriam (Don) Walker of Cedar Falls, and Shirley Shookman of Surprise, Arizona.

In addition to her husband, Leslie, Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents.
